Blog > Paint Over 2020: Color Palettes for Your 2021 Home Makeover
Without a doubt, we are all looking forward to 2021. While our day-to-day likely won’t change much as we roll into January this week, there is something exciting and hopeful about the completion of one revolution around the sun. This is a time, not only for reflection, but for facing the future and getting excited about this new chapter that lies ahead of us.
One way you can ring in the new year is by changing your setting. By freshening up your surroundings, you can set yourself up perfectly for a new perspective, routine, habit, or goal. You know, all those resolutions!
Perhaps the most impactful way to change a space is to give it a new color. Paint the walls, change the sheets, get some new pillows, hang different curtains…
But what color do you choose?
Luckily, Pantone has taken the guesswork out of it. For over 20 years, Pantone has chosen and announced a “Color of the Year,” and this year, they selected 2: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating (Yellow). According to Pantone’s announcement:
“A message of happiness supported by fortitude, the combination of PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating is aspirational and gives us hope. We need to feel that everything is going to get brighter – this is essential to the human spirit.”
Imagine the pebbles on a beach, the limestone that supports the city of Austin, the stormy skies… these are strong, enduring, and unwavering aspects of nature that share one color: gray.
Yellow, a bright cheerful yellow, is one of the happiest colors out there, giving us a sense of hope and warmth– like the sun!
If yellow and gray aren’t really your vibe, not to worry. The specifics of these shades aren’t the most important part. Rather, it’s the message.
The strength of nature and the necessity of hope come together to create an atmosphere of rejuvenated optimism and perseverance.
It’s about finding colors that share this message.
Start with your base neutral color. For 2021, it’s all about earthy tones. Choose colors that call to mind the endurance of nature: grays, earthy browns, creams.
Then choose a color that is bright. A color that pops, fills the room with positivity. Think yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, purples, golds…
