Blog > An Austin Tradition | SXSW 2022
South by Southwest is an annual festival that takes place every March in Austin, this year the 11th through the 20th. The 10-day event is split into film, music, and interactive experiences.
The best- and to some, worst- part of SXSW is that it takes over the whole city, with some events requiring a wristband and some available for free! You can expect to see international movies, speakers at the Austin Convention Center, startup companies showing off their products, and bands performing anywhere from restaurants to hotels to churches.
If you choose to go for the full SXSW experience, you can purchase a wristband for anywhere from $459 for an Online Pass to $1675 for a Platinum Badge. We’ve also got some tips and tricks for getting the most out of a free SXSW experience if you just want to dip your toes in and see what it’s all about.
Use Social Media to Your Advantage
Stalk your favorite artists, bands, and speakers on social media to keep an eye out for who may be attending! SXSW official pages, Austin venue accounts, and other local sources are great for updates before the festival, as well as line info and surprise gigs during the event.
Rules of Free Events
In some years, venues have allowed lines and will let you in as long as they are not at full capacity. Keep your schedule open and stay flexible in case you see a last minute update! There are often bars and restaurants with “no badge, no problem” signs that don’t require anything for admission.
Waiting in Line
This should be something you expect and prepare for at SXSW, whether you have a badge or not! Bring your friends, some drinks and snacks, and settle in - it’s all part of the fun!
Apps
The Do512 is said to be one of the best for searching venues and acts. In addition, SXSW Go is the official SXSW app for badge holders.
The key to SXSW is going with the flow. Go in with expectations to have fun and be flexible, and you’ll be able to enjoy the festival no matter where you end up. Plan for safe rides, parking, and traffic on the roads. Whatever you end up doing, immerse yourself in the city and- at the very least- experience some beautiful sights and delicious food along the way.
