“Home is where the heart is.” It’s an adage we’ve all heard a thousand times.
Your home is everything. Not in a materialistic way, but in the sense that it’s where everything happens. It’s where you live, sleep, think, and do things. Maybe even work.
The key word here is “you.” It’s where you are. It’s the place that facilitates your lifestyle, and in recent years, that has meant having a conscious lifestyle. That is, to go about your day with the utmost intention, working towards a lifestyle, mindset, and spiritual well-being that is in line with your ultimate goals. It’s what’s keeping you on track to self-fulfillment.

But is your home really conducive to that? Are you living in a space capable of facilitating that journey?
LIVING IN A CONSCIOUS HOME
When you live in a space that supports you, you will feel the benefits in so many ways. You will feel more grounded, calm, and inspired. Here’s a few tips for creating a conscious home:

KNOW YOURSELF
Before you even begin to undertake a major home redesign, it’s important to really understand who you’re designing for: YOU.
So who are you?
It’s the ultimate existential question, and it can be a bit daunting to think about, but digging into who you are, what you want to be, what you value, and how you want to feel… it’s all part of the equation.
One really important thing to remember is that finding and then learning yourself is a never-ending journey of evolution and growth.
But that’s the whole point of conscious living: you’re conscious, you’re aware of that growth.

FUNCTIONAL SPACES
When you live a focused life, you take part in activities or routines that put you in that right headspace or are simply just a part of that lifestyle. That could be meditation, exercise, working from home instead of an office, writing a book, art or another creative pursuit.

If these are activities you want to engage in routinely, create a space for it. For example, if you want to learn guitar, create a space for it. If you have a large living area or bedroom, create a music corner. That would mean setting your guitar up on a stand, setting out a comfortable chair, a music stand, and maybe even a desk for music and your laptop (to stream those YouTube tutorials).

If you want to start meditating more, do the same thing: create a space or redo your home office to set yourself up for daily mediation. Get your pillows, candles, speaker for your music, repaint the walls…
Literally make room for it in your life.

DECLUTTER: REMOVE STRESSORS AND ANYTHING UNNECESSARY

“Does it bring joy?”
Love her or not, the Netflix star Marie Kondo has a point.
If there is anything in your house that you don’t absolutely love, get rid of it. If you still have that mixing spoon your ex’s mother gave you for your birthday two years ago, throw it out. If you dyed your hair and that dress just doesn’t look good on you anymore, donate it.

That fancy eyelash-curler you use twice a year? Chunk it. That “live. laugh. love.” sign above the door? Get rid of it (unless it’s the motto of your life). The parka in the closet? If you live in Central Texas, you don’t need it, unless you go skiing literally every single year.
These things aren’t necessarily stressors or bring you down, but they’re just not necessary. They take up space.

DECORATE WITH INTENTION
Decor is hard. What’s the best color-combination? What’s trending? Does this go with the color of my walls? What if I paint my walls?
These are fair questions; of course you want everything to look good.
But how does it make you feel?
When you look at that “live. laugh. love.” sign in the kitchen, do you feel inspired? When you look at the throw pillow on the bed, are you in awe of how beautiful the pattern is?
If you didn’t answer “YES” to those two questions, maybe reconsider your decor.

Every color, accent, wall hanging, and piece of furniture that you have should be beautiful. You should love the patterns, colors, and styles that you put in your home. They should inspire you every time you walk into the house. It can improve your quality of life and mentality. Think about it: if you walk into an ugly space, will you be happy? Probably not. Now think about a time when you’ve walked into a gorgeous room. Remember that intake of breath you made? You can recreate that in your own space with a little bit of intention and effort.
