Blog > Organizing Your Walk-In Closet
Walk-in closets are beloved spaces for homeowners everywhere. They are spacious and forgiving, perfect for organizing all the things or just seeking a bit of refuge.
There comes a point, though, when the closet gets to be a little bit… stuffed.
Here a few tips to help you take back control of that space you love so much!
Tip #1) Give it a solid cleaning!
Sometimes, you just need a fresh start. Go remove every single item from your closet, top to bottom. Once you’ve taken everything out, clean it like you would any other room in the house: dust, disinfect, vacuum, scrub baseboards… the whole nine yards.
Tip #2) Purge, purge, purge
The main reason closets get so unorganized in the first place is because we end up filling them with too much stuff. Now that you’ve taken everything out, get rid of some things! Donate all the clothes and shoes that no longer fit and that you no longer wear.
Tip #3) Rework Your Storage
Rather than stick to the typical clothing rods and shoe rack, get creative and find ways to best maximize your space. Add shelving, drawers, and cabinets to the walls to organize little things like jewelry and accessories.
Tip #4) Store Vertically
If you’ve got some height to your closet, use it! Dedicate a wall to clothing rods. Fit as many as you can, floor to ceiling. This will free up another wall that can be used for shelving, stacking decorative boxes, a full-body mirror, or a nice bench for getting ready.
Tip #5) Organize Your Drawers
If you have or decide to add drawers, make sure you organize those. Invest in various-sized containers to organize the layout the way you want, or use ice cube trays to keep your jewelry compartmentalized.
Tip #6) Try Wonder Hangers or a Similar Item
These as-seen-on-TV items aren’t just, well, fun as-seen-on-TV items. They are actually very useful when it comes to organizing your closet. By hanging several items of clothing in one vertical place, you free up more room on your clothing rods. This can help make the space look cleaner, but also help you find what you need more easily. Take it one extra step and group your clothes by style, type, season, or color.
