Tips for Safe Trick-or-Treating
Halloween is a magical time of year and can be a lot of fun if you follow some simple safety rules to protect yourself and your children. According to NSC research, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year. These 15 tips will help give you piece of mind on a night of spooky fun!
- Decorate costumes with reflective tape or stickers.
- Use face paint instead of masks because masks can obstruct a child’s vision.
- Remind your children how to call 9-1-1 if they are in an emergency.
- Remove debris, garden hoses, toys, etc. from your yard so children do not trip.
- Only go to homes with their porch lights on.
- Never enter a home or a vehicle for treats.
- Stay in a group when trick-or-treating.
- Remain on well-lit streets and neighborhoods.
- Teach your child to politely turn down home-baked goods such as cupcakes and brownies from people they don’t know.
- Plan a route in advance and make sure parents know the route.
- Teach your children the buddy system!
- Check your child’s candy. If the wrapper is broken or the candy is not in it’s original wrapper, throw it out.
- Wear comfy shoes to avoid tripping in dark places.
- Agree on a time for children to return home.
- Discourage young drivers from driving on Halloween.
